Blow Cemetery......what a mess.

Welcome to the Broken Stones Project Blog page. I started this page as a way to remember and maybe even draw some attention to cemeteries that have long been forgotten. It is my hope that these images and stories go viral and people from every location in this country and even world realize that places like this do exist and it is our job to maintain them and keep them beautiful.

These two photo's come from a cemetery that you would never even know existed if you did not trek through  the woods to find it. It is called, The Blow Cemetery and it is located off Joe Wood Rd. in Altona, NY. There is a State issued sign that states this cemetery was established in the 1850's, and is the resting place of the settlers of Altona however, that is about it. There is no marked path to access it.

There is not a single stone standing in this little plot on top of a small hill in a very wooded and unkempt area. From what I have found only a handful of stones have any writing on the and most you can not read at all. It does seem that these settlers had the last name of Wood from the stones that I could read. It seems there may be at least 15 - 20 stones in total and I am confused as to who owns this plot and why they have not taken care of it.

If you are interested in contacting the Town Offices of Altona to ask them why this plot has been left in such disarray. Here is there address.
